New guide launched to support safer, more compassionate conversations around suicide
In a step to further support people to talk about suicide, the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) has partnered with R;pple Suicide Prevention to launch a free, practical guide designed to help individuals, employers, and educators talk about suicide with greater confidence and care.
Titled How to Talk About Suicide: Making Every Word Matter, the guide brings together lived experience insights and expert contributions from some of the UK’s leading suicide prevention charities. It aims to break down barriers to conversation, reduce stigma, and offer clear, emotionally intelligent advice for those navigating difficult discussions.
“Language matters. Empathy matters. And knowing how to support someone - whether they’re struggling, bereaved, or simply unsure how to ask for help - can be life-changing,” said Dr Claire Iveson, Director of the ZSA.
The guide complements ZSA’s free suicide awareness training and offers tailored advice across key settings, including:
- Using language with empathy and care
- Supporting someone in distress or bereaved by suicide
- Talking about suicide in the workplace, education, and at home
- Understanding the role of AI and online harms in suicide prevention
With suicide remaining one of the leading causes of death among young people and vulnerable groups, the guide is a timely resource for anyone looking to make a difference - whether in their personal life or professional role.
