Supporting a Stranger Suicide Awareness Training
Suicide Awareness Training: Supporting a Stranger is a practical, single scenario-based course that aim to help you recognise when someone might be experiencing suicidal distress in a public place and how to offer safe, compassionate support.
It is a slightly extended version of the final scenario from our general Suicide Awareness Training course.
Why this course matters
Every year, thousands of people in the UK die by suicide, and many of these deaths happen in public spaces. Distress isn’t always obvious, but small signs can tell us when someone needs help.
You don’t need to be a professional to make a difference. A simple conversation can help burst the bubble a person is in and interrupt a crisis.
What you’ll learn
This short, accessible course uses the See, Say, Signpost model to guide you through a realistic scenario between two strangers at a bus stop. It’s based on a real situation where someone stepped in after noticing worrying signs while waiting for public transport.
You’ll learn how to:
- SEE signs that someone may be at risk
- SAY the words that help you connect and ask directly about suicide
- SIGNPOST to support and help someone stay safe
You’ll also learn how to look after yourself afterwards, because supporting someone in crisis is brave, and your wellbeing matters too.
Who is this course for?
We recommend this course be taken by anyone over the age of 16. You don’t need training or expertise - just a willingness to notice when something feels ‘not quite right’ and the confidence to reach out.
